The exclusive ChessBase "flagship" annotated database. This DVD contains more than 4,4500,000 games from 1560 to 2009 in the highest ChessBase quality standard. 65,000 games contain commentary from top players, and all games are grouped in the ChessBase opening classification key, containing more than 100,000 key positions. Doing this, the photo database was extended as well to currently contain 31,000 pictures. New: Online Mega-Update! With ChessBase 10 you can download games for Mega 2010 for the whole year, a total of approximately 200,000 new games! CDVD-9007 - Knights of the South Bronx

DVD Video Format   Php  100
Under-funded schools with a large percentage of poverty-ridden students often find it difficult to provide a high quality education, but sometimes it just takes one special teacher to spark the interests and intellects of an entire classroom of children. Richard Mason (Ted Danson), a white-haired, recently unemployed businessman, decides to revive his long-dormant passion for teaching by accepting a substitute teaching position at a poverty ridden public school in the South Bronx. Thrown into a fourth-grade classroom, Mr. Mason is at first doubtful of his ability to positively impact a classroom of students that include a smart-mouthed, seemingly stupid boy named Jimmy (Malcom David Kelley), a crack-addict's daughter Kenya (Keke Palmer), French immigrant M.D. (Yves Michel-Beneche), and Kindergartner Dawson (Antonio Ortiz) who has no place to go but his sister's classroom once his half-day Kindergarten class finishes for the day. When student Jimmy stumbles upon Mr. Mason in the park one weekend, he discovers that his teacher is a brilliant chess player and becomes completely intrigued by the game. Suddenly, Mr. Mason realizes that the game of chess might just provide a whole new way to reach a classroom full of unwilling students. Soon, his students are showing up early for school in order to play chess, participating in class, and even doing their homework. As Mr. Mason encourages his students to perfect their games and enter a local chess tournament, each child's sense of self-worth grows as do their test scores in all subjects. Ultimately, the children become superior chess players as well as firm believers that if they refuse to give in to anger and use their intellect, they can become just about anything they want to be. Based on the true experience of David MacEnulty, Knights of the South Bronx is a well-acted, potent presentation about the power of intellect and self-confidence. (Ages 8 and older with parental guidance)
Middle-aged and recently unemployed, Richard Mason (Ted Danson) decides to return to his first love: teaching. He finds a job as an inner-city schoolteacher teaching fourth grade. Richard discovers a way to reach out to his skeptical students through the game of chess. Against all odds, he inspires his students to become champions, not only at chess, but in life! Ted Danson gives a compelling performance in this heroic, heartwarming story based on true events co-starring Keke Palmer and Malcolm David Kelley. Knights of the South Bronx proves that no matter who you are or where you come from, if you play like a winner, you can be a king!

CDVD-9006 - Searching for Bobby Fisher

DVD Video   PhP 100
Steve Zaillian, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Schindler's List, made his directorial debut with this critically acclaimed but little-seen drama based on the nonfiction book by Fred Waitzkin, about a father (Joe Mantegna) who discovers that his seven-year-old son (Max Pomeranc) is a genius at playing chess. The boy plays chess for fun, but when he's tutored by a former champion (Ben Kingsley) and entered into high-pressure competitions, an enjoyable pastime becomes a source of tension and resentment, forcing the father to reconsider his parental priorities. A poignant study of the difference between parental idealism and proper parenting, the movie is also an observantly witty portrait of a precocious child who is still, after all, a child, and still eager for the joyful discoveries of youth. While offering a fascinating look into the world of competitive chess, the movie's dramatically engrossing and extremely well-acted by a brilliant cast that also includes David Paymer, William H. Macy, and Dan Hedaya in memorable supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon
Josh Waitzkin is just a typical American boy interested in baseball when one day he challenges his father at chess and wins. Showing unusual precocity at the outdoor matches at Washington Square in New York City, he quickly makes friends with a hustler named Vinnie who teaches him speed chess. Josh's parents hire a renowned chess coach, Bruce, who teaches Josh the usefulness of measured planning. Along the way Josh becomes tired of Bruce's system and chess in general and purposely throws a match, leaving the prospects of winning a national championship in serious jeopardy.

CDVD-9004 - GM Alex Lenrman's  "Caro-Kann Defence"

ICC Chess.FM presents IM Alex Lenderman on the Caro-Kann Advance variation.

The Caro has a reputation of being positional, but wild, complicated games do arise from it - and mainly from the Advance variation favored by aggressive players such as Vishy Anand, Alexei Shirov, Nigel Short and John Nunn. And in this new video for ICC Chess.FM, Alex Lenderman teaches you all the nuances and tricks in his favorite line against the Caro.

CDVD-9005 -  GM Alex Lenderman "Manest on The Slav"
The solid Slav Defence with 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 is enjoying a renaissance these days thanks to its extreme solidity and abundant possibilities for dynamic counter-play. Many masters of Slavic descent helped develop its theory in the 1920s, but its popularity increased dramatically after two exhaustive trials during the Alekhine-Euwe World Championship encounters of 1935 and 1937.

It had a lengthy hiatus thereafter - but now, thanks to a modern-day re-evaluation of its theory, the Slav is back in vogue again both at grandmaster and club level. And in a new three-part opening video series for ICC Chess.FM, IM Alex Lenderman (manest) provides an ideal primer for anyone looking to learn the nuances of this perennial favorite.

1336-SP - Pandolfini's Endgame Course - Pandolfini (Fireside 1988)

Hardbound  PhP  500
These two works are as unalike as books about the same game can possibly be. Both are fine choices for their respective audiences. Pandolfini's, which uses algebraic notation throughout, is aimed at the beginning or intermediate player. It consists of 239 specific endgame positions, progressing from elementary endings to some subtle minor piece and pawn situations. Almost every example illustrates a specific principle, which is usually clearly stated. Since in many chess games, the choice of strategy is determined by the player's knowledge of what constitutes a winning endgame advantage, this is a valuable source of information. By contrast, Suetin's book, which uses the universal figurine, algebraic notation, is aimed at the more advanced club player who is trying to improve to expert or master status. Such players often find the crucial step to be the transition from the "book" position to the middle game. It is this transition that Suetin addresses. Each section has an introduction in which certain basic strategic principles are given; one or more illustrative games with some detailed analysis; and several unanalyzed sample games. Both books are recommended for libraries which have or are developing a chess collection. Harold D. Shane, Baruch Coll., CUNY

1317-SP - The French Defence - A Complete Black Repertoire - Vituigov (Chess Stars 2010)

The French Defence: A Complete Black Repertoire
Hardbound  PhP 390

From the Preface:

Black can enter the French defence, as a separate opening, on move one. I believe that seems to be comfortable for him – to have a reliable defence against 1.e4.

The point is however, that chess is becoming more popular and universal and you should have various weapons in your opening armour (..) According to the generally accepted classification, the French defence is semi-open.

I think it can suit the style both of aggressive tactical players, as well as of the adherents to the patient positional maneuvering. The philosophical justification of the French defence is quite solid. (..)

In this book you will not find the equivocal answer to principled questions of the type “Can you equalize by playing the French defence?”, or “Can White obtain a convincing advantage after 1...e6?”.(..)

We have already seen in the French defence striking novelties in variations with perfect reputation, as well as rehabilitation of lines long past and forgotten. Accordingly, I have decided to present to my readers the French defence – the way I see and understand it.

I believe that chess players of all levels can find in this book something new. It will enable some of you to include the French defence in our opening repertoire and for some others to enrich your opening knowledge and sharpen the understanding of its ideas.

The time has long passed when you could have played the opening only according to common sense. Therefore, there are many extensive analyses of concrete positions in the book and new ideas discovered in the process of preparation for games and tournaments.

This book has been written from the point of view of Black, but this should preclude studying it by players who prefer the White side of the French defence. It is always useful to know something thoroughly.

It may happen that a player, who loves the White side against the French, might become an ardent fan of it as Black!

1305-SP - Chess Successes : Planning After the Opening - McDonald (Batsford 2007)

Chess Success: Planning After the Opening (Batsford Chess Books)
Hardbound  PhP  440

It’s a fact that you can win some chess games just by playing one solid-looking move after another. But at the higher levels of competition, it’s not enough to play move by move: you need a plan. Chess Success is about making that plan. It shows, with fascinating examples taken from actual grandmaster games, why the solid-looking move—the “natural” move—can often be a subtle blunder. Learn to make a better move by first looking at the pawn structure of the game and understand how it’s “warped” by the positions of the pieces. Apart from this powerful new way of looking at chess strategy, the games with their unexpected twists are tremendously entertaining to replay.

Neil McDonald is an International Grandmaster and a prolific chess author and trainer. Previous Batsford titles include The Art of Planning in Chess (071349025X), Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking (0713488948), The Sicilian Bb5 Revealed (0713489804) and The Benko Gambit Revealed (0713488689). 1284-SP - Chess Endgame Training-Rosen (Gambit 2003)

Chess Endgame Training
Hardbound  PhP  330

This is an endgame manual with a difference. As soon as a topic has been introduced and a few basic ideas discussed, you are immediately invited to immerse yourself in the subject by solving a series of relevant positions. The solutions to these positions feature a wealth of practical advice and further discussion of endgame principles and the key theoretical points. This carefully worked-out training program will enable you quickly and painlessly to determine where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and thus set about correcting any faults.
All the main types of endgames are covered: pawn endings, minor-piece endings, rook endings and queen endings. Rosen discusses important elements in endgame strategy, such as pawn structure, passed pawns, space advantage, breakthrough, and zugzwang. Endgames are often highly tactical, and this is reflected throughout this book in exercises that require precise calculation, and in sections devoted to typical tactical themes.

The wealth of exercises throughout this book also make it an ideal endgame refresher course that will be of great benefit even to those who are already highly proficient in the endgame.

Bernd Rosen is a highly qualified trainer who writes a regular column in a German chess magazine. He gained his FIDE Master title in 1987 and has played in the German Bundesliga for many years.

Beating the Fianchetto Defences - A Challenging Repertoire-Grivas (Gambit 2006)

Beating the Fianchetto Defences
Hardcover, Php 350

Product Description

Grivas provides a full and detailed repertoire for White against five important openings: the Grünfeld, King's Indian, Benoni, Benko and Modern. In each case, he has recommended a line in which he has a wealth of experience, and has played a significant personal role in developing over many years. The recommendations are geared towards posing Black unconventional problems: your opponents will not be able to churn out lengthy memorized variations, but will need to solve problems at the board in positions that are somewhat different in character from those normally reached in these openings. Grivas has also chosen the repertoire so that it forms a seamless whole, and will fit alongside an English or Réti move-order, in addition to a standard 1 d4 repertoire.

About the Author

Grandmaster Efstratios Grivas lives in Athens and is also an International Arbiter and Organizer. He has represented his country on a great many occasions, winning an individual gold medal at the 1989 European Team Championship and an individual silver medal at the 1998 Olympiad. He is a federal trainer and an experienced writer. This is his second book on chess openings for Gambit.

How to Choose a Chess Move-Andrew Soltis (Batsford 2005)

How to Choose a Chess Move (Batsford Chess Books)
Hardcover, PhP 425

Product Description
There are more than 30 moves to choose from in a typical chess position. Yet masters regularly manage to select the best one--and they do it faster, more confidently, and with less calculation than other players. The reason: masters know shortcuts that enable them to think more efficiently. International Grandmaster Andrew Soltis explains these techniques, including how to use specific cues to find good moves, how to streamline the analysis of a move's consequences, and how to use both objective and highly subjective criteria to find the right move--from any position. An enlightening window into a Grandmaster's thinking process.

About the Author

International Master Andrew Soltis is a professional journalist and popular chess writer. He is the author of Bobby Fischer Rediscovered (0713488468) and Rethinking the Chess Pieces (0713489049), also published by B T Batsford. He lives in New York.
